chairman’s address

Dear COECSA Fellows, Speakers and Panelists, Delegates, Exhibitors, Sponsors, Friends and families

Welcome to the 8th COECSA Congress – the Virtual version of 2021..

The College of Ophthalmology of Eastern central and Southern Africa (COECSA) continues to focus on advocating for quality Eye care delivery in our region. The theme of this year congress is: Beyond Vision 2020: Timely Affordable and Sustainable Eyecare for All.

I take this opportunity to thank the Scientific and research Committee that worked tirelessly to put together a robust scientific content/program with speakers from all over the world. I also thank Tilvera Consulting Ltd, our event planner for hosting this year’s virtual congress.

The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly affected COECSA region in different ways. I take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt condolences to the families that lost their loved ones to COVID 19.

We are a resilient people and we shall come out of it stronger than before. Our various governments are still trying to get enough vaccines for our people despite the global inequities and inequalities. The Healthcare workers being the most vulnerable, have been given the priority for accessing these vaccines. If this continues in all our East, Central and Southern Africa region, we hope to be able to meet physically in Blantyre Malawi in 2022 as we had planned for 2020. COECSA Congress is more than just the science. There is a Social Component, networking, … that cannot be ignored.

Lastly, I would to thank our sponsors who have always come in to partner with us during our past congresses. We have had successful partnerships with many exhibitors and sponsors. I urge all delegates to visit the exhibitors’ virtual booths. It is a new virtual experience for many but you can still get the information you want on their various products. The 2021 Congress materials shall be available on the Whova platform for another 3 months post the Congress. Welcome once again.

Stay Safe. Stay Strong.

Enjoy the Conference.
