Social Programme

This amazing 2 day tour to Ngamba Chimps Sanctuary. The Island is a chimpanzee sanctuary managed by the Jane Goodall Institute. Ngamba Island consists of approximately 100 acres, 98 of which are forested and separated from the visitors’ area by an electric fence. Ngamba Island was officially opened to visitors in October 1999 and is currently home to 40 orphaned chimpanzees.

Day 1: Transfer to Ngamba Chimps Sanctuary
After breakfast leave hotel, you are transferred to the pier in Entebbe. From where we take a pleasant (45 minutes) boat ride on Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island. On arrival at the Island, home to 39 chimpanzees, you will be given a short introduction and briefing on the sanctuary like why it was established and the back ground as well.

You will reach in time for feeding the Chimpanzee and you will watch them feed. Spend about 1 hour with the chimps and later in the afternoon take a rest at the pool side or the lake shores as you wait for the next feeding of the chimps to watch them feed. It’s astounding!
Obviously the ideal option would be to re-introduce these orphaned chimpanzees to the wild however this is not possible for a number of different reasons and the sanctuary is not bad for second best.

Opportunities are available for you to enjoy being close enough to view the behavior of one of our closest animal relatives. (Please note that you will be required to have shots of Hepatitis A and B, Measles, (or had the disease as a child, Meningococcal / menomune vaccine, Polio, tetanus-up to date and yellow fever).
Meals and overnight at Ngamba Tented Camp (Full Board).

Day 2: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary - Optional Activities
There are OPTIONAL special activity programs available whilst there overnight (t
Forest walks with the chimpanzees (on payment of US$500 per person):

The Forest Walk experience offers you an opportunity to join a group of juvenile chimpanzees on a one hour walk through their forest habitat in the early morning. A maximum of four visitors are allowed in the forest for each walk, always accompanied by trained CSWCT staff for your safety and interpretation. You will be in the company of several chimpanzees ranging in age from 5 years to 8 years of age and you will have direct contact as we orient them to life in the forest and possible future release program back to the wild. There are very specific instructions regarding clothing, cameras, glasses, and behaviour when signing up for this unique opportunity as these chimpanzees are used to human contact and they will play-bite, climb on you, grab your glasses, and pull your hair or even just walk along holding your hand. And that’s where the fun just begins!

Depending upon how manageable the chimps are, there is no guarantee on how long this activity will go on for, and it may be curtailed any time – please check when booking.

Infant chimpanzees Integration Program (on payment of US$350 per person):
This is a unique program that provides opportunity for visitors to participate in the integration of the infant chimps to the bigger individuals and group at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Chimpanzees as social animals live in social groups called communities. At Ngamba Island, we have integrated the orphaned chimpanzees into one community. But this is a continuous program, as we get new individuals we go through the program of integrating them to the group. We currently have two infants that arrived on the island by end of August 2008. Until now we had been integrating them in the holding facility and we are now starting to integrate them from the outside enclosures as we slowly and one by one introduce the other bigger chimps to them. By being part of the team going out in the enclosure with the infants, you will have the opportunity to give support to them by holding them, as there may be need, as they are introduced to the juvenile individuals. After this stage of the integration is when we take them on the walk in the main forest. A maximum of two visitors will be allowed per session of the integration program that would last up to one hour, with two sessions a day, morning and evening. This is a very short term program. Take the chance while you still can!

Ngamba Island Caregiver for the day (on payment of US$150 per person):
This is a unique program where our visitors get the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Chimpanzee Caregiver by being Caregivers themselves! As a chimp caregiver, you will get the exciting opportunity to not only view the chimps feeding, but to participate in preparing their food and feeding them. You can assist the staff with any activities happening at the sanctuary that day – medical check-ups, research and monitoring, preparing the holding areas for the chimps and administrative work, where by you can help to type in the chimp stories and any other activities that your skills and experience can be used for. This is a program aimed at helping our visitors understand and appreciate what it takes to look after our orphaned cousins on Ngamba Island as well as raising funds for their well-being. The staff will work with you to show you just what is involved in taking care of these animals, how individual they are, and what makes them so special.
As a caregiver, you get to meet and interact with all the chimps on the Island but DIRECT CONTACT with them is not guaranteed but possible under close supervision of a resident Caregiver.
(Clients must have specific up to date vaccinations for this activity, which is restricted to three people at any one time, and should ask for further details before booking).

Sanctuary Special requirements for optional activities:

  • Minimum/ maximum age limits:
  • Minimum age is 18 years
