Call For Abstracts

You are invited to forward your abstracts for inclusion in the scientific programme of the 6th COECSA Congress to be held on 29th, 30th and 31st  August 2018. The theme of the Congress is STAND FOR ACTION! EYE CARE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS.”

Kindly find instructions for preparation of abstracts below:

·         Papers will only be accepted on the understanding that the main author or a co-author will personally present the paper.

·         All participants must disclose in writing in advance of the meeting any significant financial interest or other relationships they may have with the manufacturers of commercial products discussed in their presentations, panel or written materials.

·         Acceptance and presentation of oral presentations and posters require full payment of registration fees for the congress.


Two Options:

1.        Oral presentations: 10 minutes for presentation (7 presentation, 3 minutes discussion).

2.       Poster: there will be a poster session during breaks.



·         The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 July 2018

·         Abstracts should not exceed 300 words

·         Authors must state whether they wish their presentation to be considered as oral presentation OR poster

·         Would you be prepared to do a poster if your oral presentation cannot be accommodated?

·         Registrars who want to be considered for the registrar awards, must clearly indicate this and their submissions must be accompanied by a letter from their academic Head of Department confirming that they are registrars or have qualified within the last year and the research being presented was done during their registrar time

·         It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that the organizers have received your abstract(s)

·         Authors will be informed of the acceptance of their abstracts by 21 July 2018

·         You can also submit your abstract in Microsoft Word as an attachment via email to:

·         Please state the full names of the authors and one corresponding email.



·         Centre the title at the top of the page - use Arial font type (bold) and 14 font size

·         Authors should be listed by surname, followed by initials and affiliation. Underline the presenting author’s name

Do not include degrees, titles, institutional appointments or addresses. Do not use abbreviations.


·         The body of the abstract must be typed with single spacing – use Arial font type and 12 font size. 

Structure of Abstract:

a) Objectives

State the main question / objective of the study / hypothesis tested

b) Design and method

Briefly describe the design of the study and how it was conducted, indicating sampling and inclusion criteria, sample size, treatment and duration of observations.

c) Results

Present the main results with an indication of variability (e.g. SD) and precision of comparison (e.g. 95% confidential intervals) where appropriate.

d) Conclusion

Limit the conclusion to those findings that are directly supported by the results. Implications and generalisations may be outlined briefly. Do not leave open lines between sections and do not indent headings. Headings should be underlined


·         Use Microsoft Word format

·         Abstracts should not exceed 300 words

·         Only standard abbreviations may be used without definition

·         Use generic drug names although trade names may be given as well in special circumstances

·         The congress organizers accept no responsibility for copyright infringements

Acknowledgement and Notification

·         As soon as the abstract has been received, the Congress Organizers will send an acknowledgement to the corresponding author

·         The Scientific Committee will send notification of the acceptance of your abstract(s) by e-mail by 15 July 2016. Confirmation will also be given as to whether it will be an oral presentation or poster

Poster Format:

·         All posters should be a visual presentation of your submitted abstract and they should meet the following criteria:


·         The poster must be no larger than A0 size (AO size is 841mm x 1189mm)

·         Orientation of your poster must be in portrait style.


·         The title should be the same as in the submitted abstract

·         20-24 mm or 100 point maximum

·         Upper and Lower Case

·         At the top of the poster include the title of the presentation, the name of the authors and the institution where the work was completed.


·         48 point is suggested - 60 point maximum

·         Title Case Headings such as “Introduction”, “Methods”, “Results”, “Discussions” and “Conclusions” are useful

Content Lettering

·         The poster should be easily readable at a distance of two metres. Use UPPER and lower case for general content as the use of all-capital text is difficult to read. Avoid using a mixture of type/font styles

·         24-28 point - 32 point maximum

·         Single spaced Upper and Lower Case

·         The text should be brief throughout

·         Any description of methods should be simple and concise


·         The message that your poster contains should be clear and understandable without the requirement of oral explanation.

·         Methods should be presented simply and concisely

·         After the title, the two most important panels are the Introduction and the Conclusion.

·         On the basis of these two panels, a reader will decide whether to consider the poster details and perhaps talk to the presenter.

·         These panels need to be very simple, concise and visually attractive

·         Results should be presented graphically if possible. Avoid large tables of data. Results should be in line with those originally submitted in your abstract

·         Use pictures, symbols and color. Figure legends are essential and should be short but informative

·         Each graph should have a short heading. For visual effect, we recommend that graphs be no smaller than 12cm x 18cm

·         A matte finish on photographs gives better visibility. Photographs should be no smaller than 12cm x 18cm

·         Use the space to attract your audience for discussion, not to present complex details of methods and results
